Growing up hearing gunshots

Take MacArthur Park, where Census surveys show the child poverty rate is double the California average. The neighborhood’s namesake grassy square is so crime-ridden that many parents refuse to let their children play outside.

The Los Angeles Police Department arrested 3,000 juveniles in the neighborhood in 2011 alone, the most recent data available. Most were for theft — but 14 were taken in on suspicion of homicide.
Kids here deal with parents being deported, siblings being locked up or social workers being called in to take kids away from neglectful or abusive parents. They often live in cramped, crowded apartments with two or more families.

Ana Ponce herself grew up an immigrant in MacArthur Park and thought: it’s time to change how a school tries to reach students.

“We had this understanding that we can not teach kids that are not ready to learn because they were preoccupied with all of the barriers they encountered on their way to school - or all of their fears they had leaving school,” she said.

In the early 2000s, Ponce joined the leadership of a small charter school called Camino Nuevo in her neighborhood. It has since grown to a network of eight schools

giving parents the knowledge to protect their families

The Ebola outbreak is all over the news and the numbers can feel overwhelming.
At least 6,553 people have been infected across the region and over 3,083 have already died from the disease.
In Sierra Leone there are 5 new cases every hour.
Yet for people living in the affected countries, this crisis isn’t about numbers. It’s only about loved ones who are sick, and who are dying.

Sam’s story
Sam* is around three years old and lives in the remote district of Kailahun, eastern Sierra Leone, which has been heavily affected by the outbreak.
When Sam’s mum caught Ebola, she brought him and his little brother Peter* to the Ebola treatment centre run by Médecins Sans Frontières‎. Neither Sam nor Peter was found to have symptoms of Ebola, so they were taken to an interim care centre supported by Save the Children.
Sam was very thin when he arrived, and later developed a sore throat. The team at the care centre made sure he had the treatment he needed to get better.

A terrible fate for a tiny child
Sam’s younger brother Peter was not so lucky. He developed symptoms of the disease and was immediately transferred to the treatment centre but sadly, he died shortly afterwards.
However, there is a little good news in the midst of this family tragedy: Sam’s mother has made a full recovery. She now lives at the care centre with Sam, where she is able to help out.
Sam is not currently believed to have Ebola, but he and his mum must wait until the 21-day incubation period is over to be sure. At the moment Sam is healthy and being cared for.

Support is vital
Without the support provided at the Save the Children-supported interim care centre, Sam would have been more vulnerable to catching this deadly disease. Instead, he has been looked after throughout this extremely traumatic experience.
Unfortunately, this interim care centre is one of very few such places currently operating in Sierra Leone.
There are 2.5 million children under five living in areas affected by the Ebola outbreak. They are at risk of catching the disease themselves but also of losing their parents or carers.
The scale of this outbreak can seem paralysing; but we can help, and we must act.

Awareness and education
It’s vital that we continue to raise awareness and educate people on preventing the disease’s spread. It’s equally important that there are sufficient care facilities and trained staff to handle cases.
When Sam’s mum got sick, she recognised the symptoms and knew where to go. In a terrible situation, she did the best for her family. We want to enable many more families to do the same.
We have already trained more than 3,000 community health workers, to go from house to house explaining how to prevent infection.
We have also set up a treatment centre in Liberia, and are helping the UK government to set one up in Sierra Leone.
So far, we have reached more than 265,000 people across four countries. But we need to do much more. Please support our Ebola Crisis Appeal.

A different approach

At a recent 7 a.m. meeting, Camino Nuevo elementary and middle school teachers clustered into groups, sounding a lot like social workers. Their task: to figure out how to “use positivity and relationships to reverse some of the negative effects of poverty.”

Sarah Wechsler reported a dramatic improvement in one of her students, whose mother was recently deported.

“We’ve loved him, and we’ve replaced his mom the best we can,” she said. “And he’s done all his work this week.”

Ponce said she sees the school’s job as improving the lives of students’ entire families.
Staff helps parents enroll younger siblings in preschool and hooks parents up with healthcare providers. School sites have a full-time parent liaison to provide referrals for those struggling with housing, employment or legal problems.

In group sessions, parents are taught how to participate in their children’s education and relate better to them.

Stop Female Foeticide & Save the Girl Child

Standing in the 20th century, when the whole world is awakening to the call of feminism, a girl child in India is still regarded as burdensome. In some parts of India, still a daughter is always given the last preference because of dowry system. But it’s really very unfortunate to know that instead of killing the dowry system, people kill their girl child and that even before their birth. Before they see the world, the female fetus is killed in the mother’s womb.

Killing Female Fetus Leads to Murder
After the baby develops in the womb and the sex can be determined it is called feticide. The advancement of technology has led to determine the sex of a baby before it is born. Thus taking advantage of this, many people determine the sex of the child which is illegal in India and don’t even hesitate to kill, if the fetus is found to be a girl child. Since the child already develops it is nothing but murder.

Although disclosing the gender of a baby is not legal in India, many doctors do so for money and even arrange for the abortion. Numerous medical clinics are there which are involved in such illegal activities. But the most disturbing part is that though it’s a big crime, rarely the culprits get convicted. And this is not only common in rural India but also in cities where some families with the desire to have a baby boy kill the female fetus

Why to Save A Girl Child - Importance?

She is the one that makes our life extra special and brings extra sunshine, laughter and happiness to our daily life. A Woman is one that shapes the civilization.

It is very sad that most of the girls that are born in our country are not found in hospital they got missing and are found in the graveyard.
India is a developing country and in recent years its development has grown very dynamically in every field. India is making its name in world with the boom in its economy, technology development, new innovations in the technology and also the infrastructure has improved also, this is making India proud. But still there are some persons or cultures that are biasing against a girl child in their family.

This is the most dangerous social evil that has deep roots in our country. And the shocking fact is that there are high technologies and innovative techniques are available for killing a girl child like ultrasound, scan tests and amniocentesis etc.

What we need now is to know that every family in the country should be educated on the whole country basis that Girl Child is not a sin it is a gift to you given by the God to you, as she has nothing less than boys. Today girls are competing boys in every field and making their name in every field and pushing back every one.

A Celebration of the Girl Child

Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Center for social research Delhi CSR launched the second phase of its previous program Meri Shakti,Meri Beti (My Daughter, My Strength), today in New Delhi.
The program aims to address the challenge through multiple interventions which include carrying sensitization with families and engaging with other stakeholders to correct the existing sex ratio imbalance in the capital. To mark the launch, CSR organized a ‘Kanya Janm Mahotsav’ in the Aanganwadi Center, next to the Kishangarh Choupal. The aim of this event was to raise awareness regarding female foeticide, as well as to explain the project and its goals to the community members. At this event, fifty mothers with girl children up to 1 year of age were felicitated, and celebrated, for giving birth to a girl child. The MSMB project is supported by the German Embassy and the chief guest for this event was the German Ambassador His Excellency Mr. Cord Meier–Koldt. The event started with a poem recitation by two girls of the Choupal, which was about female foeticide, thus setting the tone of the entire event. This was followed by a brief description of CSR, the work undertaken and the long association with the community, done by Dr. Milly Chatterjee, Head of the Development Division. Then, Dr. Manasi Mishra, Head of the Research Division, spoke about the MSMB project, and its relevance. Following this, the German delegates were felicitated, and Dr. Ranjana Kumari, the Director of CSR, said a few lines on the importance of the girl child, and how this MSMB project needs community support for its success. She then called upon the German Ambassador to address the people gathered, who expressed his pleasure at being associated with such a project, and the important role of women in societies across the world. Following the speeches, the felicitation ceremony began. The fifty pre-selected mothers of girl children were called, and the German Ambassador put a tika on their forehead, garlanded them, and handed over a gift to the child. Once the felicitation ceremony ended, the ladies of the community gathered to dance and sing, and created an atmosphere of celebration. The Kanya Janm Mahotsav was an initiative to make the community members realize that the birth of a girl child, is as much a cause of celebration and joy, as the birth of a boy. It aimed to create awareness amongst the people about female foeticide, and how wrong it is. The event was also an attempt to convey to the community members, that the success of the MSMB program relies on people like them, and every single person present, can make a significant contribution to end the evil of female foeticide

Save Girl Child In India

Save Girl Child
Welcome to the world of save girl child, promising yet gloomy, hopeful, yet in despair. The hand that rocks the cradle, the procreator, the mother of tomorrow; a woman shapes the destiny of civilization. Such is the tragic irony of fate, that a beautiful creation such as the girl child is today one of the gravest concerns facing humanity, with a volley of summits, conferences and events held for the cause, with topmost world leaders at the helm.

India is growing dynamically in every field. Today, the boom in economy, innovative technologies and improved infrastructure has become nation’s pride. The country has witnessed advancements in all fields but bias against a girl child is still prevailing in the country.

This social evil is deep rooted in Indian ethos and the most shocking fact is that the innovative and hard high end technologies are brutally killing the Indian girl child. Innovative techniques, like biopsy, ultrasound, scan tests and amniocentesis, devised to detect genetic abnormalities, are highly misused by number of families to detect gender of the unborn child. These clinical tests are highly contributing to the rise in genocide of the unborn girl child.

In today’s day and age most couples prefer the process known as a planned pregnancy, because of various factors; prime amongst them being the financial well being to support the birth and nurturing of a child. In such cases, the first prenatal visit actually happens prior to actual pregnancy, to see whether one is ready to go off the contraception pills and conceive a baby.

However, in maximum conceptions, one is unaware of the pregnancy until actual realization dawns after one skips the first menstrual cycle. Normally doctors except ladies to pay their first visit anywhere between the sixth and twelfth week after conception.

Amniocentesis started in India in 1974 to detect fetal abnormalities. These tests were used to detect gender for the first time in 1979 in Amritsar, Punjab. Later the test was stopped by the Indian Council of Medical Research but it was too late. The benefits of these tests were leaked out and people started using it as an instrument for killing an innocent and unborn girl child.  Many of the traditional women organizations also took up cudgels to stop this illegal practice but all failed and with the passage of time these tests became a major contributor to bias against a girl child.

Female feticide and infanticide is not the only issues with a save girl child in India. At every stage of life she is discriminated and neglected for basic nutrition, education and living standard. When she was in the womb, she was forced to miss the moment when she was supposed to enter the world. At the time of birth her relatives pulled her back and wrung her neck. After killing her she was thrown into a trash can.

During childhood, her brother was loaded with new shoes, dresses and books to learn while she was gifted a broom, a wiper and lots of tears. In her teenage, she missed tasty delicious food to eat and got only the crumbs. During her college days, she was forced to get married, a stage where illiteracy, lack of education resulted in high fertility rate, aggravating the condition of females in the country. Again if this female gives birth to a girl child, the journey begins once again. She missed all roses of life and was finally fitted to a graveyard. That’s where she got peace of mind.

The nation of mothers still follows a culture where people idolizes son and mourns daughters. UN figures out that about 750,000 girls are aborted every year in India. Abortion rates are increasing in almost 80% of the India states, mainly Punjab and Haryana. These two states have the highest number of abortions every year. If the practice continues, then no longer a day will come when Mother India will have no mothers, potentially, no life.
We all are proud citizens of India. The need of hour is to realize our responsibilities and give a halt to this evil crime. What can we do to curb the brutal and undesirable practice of mass killing girls? A determined drive can initiate a spark to light the lamp and show the world that we all are part of the great Mother India..

'Perseverance and inspiration often leads to privilege but without hard work and dedication they'll be no success. The hardest profession to take in life is being a girl child. Discrimination and discrepancy are two most important factors that hamper the journey of every female from the earliest stage of life. Starting from her presence into her mother’s womb to infancy, childhood and finally to adulthood, she is outnumbered by the male dominating society of the country.

India is a country where social disadvantage outweighs natural biological advantage of being a girl. A whole range of discriminatory practices including female foeticide, female infanticide, female genital mutilation, son idolization, early marriage and dowry have buried the future of the nation. In India, discriminatory practices have greatly influenced the health and well-being of a girl child, resulting in a higher mortality rate.
It is believed that every year 12 million girls are born in the country but unfortunately only 1/3 of those survive. Some are killed in the womb, some at the time of birth, some die due to ill health and some due to poor nutritional status. Only a few numbers of girls are able to survive till their 15th birthday.

JAISALMER: The father of a baby girl, who died in suspicious circumstances, was arrested and sent to judicial custody for 15 days. Police claim that Deen Singh alias Dileep Singh, the father of the girl, deliberately denied her treatment, which led to her death.

According to the local medical authorities, members of some communities, infamous for killing baby girls, have now found a new way to make the deaths look 'natural'. The baby girls are either not fed enough or denied treatment. The authorities came across three such cases in Tejmalta and Mandi villages of the district during the last 10 days.

On Friday, Dileep Singh was arrested after his daughter, who was born on June 13, died in the absence of proper treatment. According to SP Mamta Vishnoi, SDM Fatehgarh has submitted a report to Sangad police station in this regard, following which a case was registered and action was taken. A special team recovered the body of the baby for post-mortem.

Vishnoi said investigation into the case revealed that Singh did not make any efforts to save the child. "During the investigation, contradictory information came to light pointing that Singh was completely careless towards his daughter. He was arrested on Friday and sent to judicial custody on Saturday,'' added Vishnoi.

In last 10 days, three newborn girls died suspiciously in the area. According to reports, Keku Kanwar delivered a healthy baby at Tejmalta on June 8 but was brought to the Jhinjhinyali primary health centre in serious condition the next day. The baby did not survive. On the same day, the death of yet another baby girl was reported, following which the entire family is missing.

District collector Shuchi Tyagi accepted the fact that some people are deliberately resorting to inhuman methods in order to save themselves from the law. Tyagi said it is a planned conspiracy and of the three recent cases, the newborns were buried in the backyard of the house. They also use chemical or salt so that body gets destroyed quickly. "The reasons could not be found in the post-mortem. Therefore, viscera has been sent to FSL for investigation and after the report comes, the reasons of death would be known. We are also talking to experts about what can be done to avoid such incidents,'' she said

Indian father kills baby ‘for being a girl’

Indian father accused of killing baby ‘for being a girl’
Bangalore, India (CNN) — Nineteen-year-old Reshma Banu sits on the stairs outside her parents’ home, staring at the tiny screen on her cell phone. The video on the screen has her mesmerized: a very short home video of her baby girl, Afreen. The moments captured are precious because they show Banu’s only child alive and well.

Afreen died in the hospital. She was three months old. Authorities say the baby was admitted to the hospital with bite marks, cigarette burns and a dislocated neck. Police say she was killed by her father.

“After my delivery my husband had come to see me and the baby. He said, ‘It is a girl, why did you give birth to a girl?’”

He wanted a boy, an heir. Girls were too expensive, he said. A couple of days after giving birth, Banu says her husband gave an ultimatum.

“For her wedding we will require a hundred thousand rupees (about US$1,800 dollars) for all the expense. If you can get that amount from your mother, then keep her, but if you can’t, then kill her,” Banu recalled her husband as saying.

She didn’t believe he meant it and was sure he would change his mind once he held his soft, bright-eyed baby girl. Three months later, her baby is dead, and her husband is under arrest, accused of beating the baby to death. Police say he confessed to the killing.

This is by no means the first case of its kind in India. Attitudes, traditions, and economics have come together to make being a girl a dangerous prospect in the country, doctors say. Most of the time girls are disposed of long before they are born. (CONTINUE)

“Don’t kill your baby girls,”

But the miserable lives in store for baby girls born in Pakistan, makes it easy to understand why some mothers prefer to kill them at birth.
Girls/women who rebel against the oppression they face from their own families end in in psyche wards. Some have actually lost their minds from the beatings, virtual imprisonment in their homes, and girls-for-sale forced marriages. Others are perfectly sane, but their Muslim families don’t want to deal with daughters who refuse to be subservient.

Runaways fleeing forced marriages, abusive husbands, and rapists are sent to prison because under Islamic law, you can be charged with a rape crime, even if you are the victim.

The kidnapping and selling of young girls to old men is a big business for the thriving Pakistani sex slave traders. Unimpeded by the government, corrupt police are paid off for their silence by the sex traders. In some cases, officials and police even assist the slave traders by sending runaway girls to them. Many of these girls end up in the hundreds of brothels which are doing big business in Karachi.

Not surprisingly, the narrator absolves Islam of any blame for the horrific conditions suffered by women in Pakistan.

Shocking rise in baby girl murders in Pakistan
The babies are victims of what one relief agency calls Pakistan’s worst unfolding tragedy: the killing and dumping of newborns. “Sometimes they hang them, sometimes they stab them, and sometimes we find bodies which have been burned to death,” said Anwar Kazmi, of the Edhi Foundation, Pakistan’s largest private social service and relief agency.

At a morgue in Pakistan, five small pouches line the shelf of a walk-in freezer. Wrapped inside each is the corpse of an infant. The killing and dumping of newborns, mostly girls, is happening more often.
More than 1,200 newborns were killed and dumped in Pakistan last year, an increase of about 200 from the previous year. Statistics show that roughly nine out of 10 are baby girls, which families may consider too costly to keep in a country where women frequently are not allowed to work. The babies are usually just days old. Their corpses are often dumped in Karachi’s sprawling garbage dumps, where they’re sometimes mutilated by street animals, Kazmi said. He estimates that hundreds of baby corpses are never found.

baby girl saved from abortion

Argentinean baby girl saved from abortion brings joy to family

(EWTN) — In its June edition, the Argentinean magazine Familia y Vida featured the story of a baby girl who was conceived through rape but spared from abortion, and has become the joy of her family’s home.

The case of Luz Maria stirred the province of Missiones in 2011, as numerous organizations, media outlets and government officials urged that she be aborted because she was the product of rape.

The family, however, resisted pressure to abort Luz Maria.

“For us it was a race against time,” said Julieta Lardies of the Federal Network of Families, which worked to help save the baby’s life.

“If we had to describe what we went through when this started we would say they were the five most intense days we have ever faced,” she added.

“Given the circumstances, each hour that passed, each minute, could have been decisive for the life of little Luz Maria, who since her mother’s womb was awaiting a death sentence.”

The magazine said Luz Maria’s testimony is essential to pushing back against the implementation of a March 13 Supreme Court ruling allowing abortions to be performed in cases of rape.

Children are dying because of the fear of Ebola

Confronting rumours and myths
Ebola is spreading across Sierra Leone at an alarming rate, yet half the battle is to confront the rumours and myths that so often sweep through communities in times of crisis.
Sarah, the manager of a local health centre, used to see 20 to 30 children every day as well as 10 or more mothers. But there has been a dramatic reduction in attendance since the outbreak.
According to Sarah, “they are scared to come because they are always saying that when they come to the hospital we class them all as Ebola patients.”

Common illnesses going untreated
This fear means that common illnesses such as respiratory tract infections, malaria, diarrhoea and vomiting, are going untreated - sometimes with serious consequences.
“Most of the children are not coming to the clinic because their mothers are scared to bring them,” says Sarah. The children “are dying because of the fear of Ebola.”
“I met a mother when we went out,” she continues, “her child was very malnourished.
“He was unable to eat. So we tried to talk to the mother about the child’s condition. We advised the mother and told her to bring the child to the hospital.
“She promised us that she would come but she never did.

“The understanding is not there”
“The understanding is not there. We tell them what will happen if they don’t come to the clinic but only a few come. But that will not stop us. We will continue our work to raise awareness.”
In the face of this unprecedented health crisis, it is vitally important that communities are given the tools and knowledge to protect themselves. Save the Children has funded Sarah’s clinic and is also providing training and support for the community health workers.
Patrick is one of these. He learnt about Ebola through a number of workshops run by Save the Children and other NGOs.
Initially, they would go door-to-door to see whether there were any suspected cases of Ebola, but now they are also giving people health and hygiene advice.

“We must overcome our fear”
Patrick says: “Ebola is killing a lot of people…As a community health worker, you have made a vow to serve the community. You can be afraid of the disease, but we are there to raise awareness and we must overcome our fear.
We are not doing this for ourselves, but for the unborn children and for our future.”

When bombs fall as regularly as rain

Save the Children works independently and impartially around the world– wherever there is need. We are currently working in Gaza and the West Bank. Save the Children as a global organization is equally concerned about the wellbeing of children in Israel as those in the West Bank and Gaza.

Osama Damo is part of the Save the Children team on the ground in Gaza, and this blog represents his perceptions from living and working there.
Where bombs fall as regularly as rain

It starts in earnest after the sun sets. I’m not sure why. It is Ramadan at the moment, and here in Gaza we are fasting 16 hours a day. Our only moment of joy is breaking our fast together at sunset. But not now. With darkness comes death these days.
From my home I can hear the sounds of bombs falling in Gaza from Israel and sometimes rockets being launched here in Gaza toward Israel. Gaza is so tiny, the buildings rattle and shake with every bomb.

We joke darkly amongst ourselves. The last offensive (in 2012) took place in the winter, and we told our children that it was lightning strikes, thunder. Those noises are not to be feared. But now, what can we tell them? It is summer. And so we laugh without humour, and tell each other that perhaps it is time to tell our children the truth.
When we realised how serious the situation was becoming, we became glued to the TV for news. We performed our routine check – are our friends ok? Our family? You do this check so regularly. We check our fridge – how much food do we have? How much water?

We have a phrase in Arabic, literally translated it means ‘we have not even had the chance to breathe yet’ – since the last conflict in 2012. It seems we have not even had the chance to adjust ourselves, to convince our children they are safe, before they are not safe anymore.

The silliest things go round in my mind. I am an avid football fan, and was so enjoying the World Cup. Now I hate it. Only when it is over will the rest of the world perhaps be interested in what is unfolding in our little corner of the world.

And the darker, more morbid thoughts. What will our children grow up to be, these young children, of six years old, who have now known three of these offensives/military operations conflicts? When bombs seem to fall as regularly as rain. How will they ever view peace? On both sides… for some children this is normal now, they barely flinch. I honestly don’t know what is worse.

The streets are eerily quiet, the honking of horns has subsided. The only noise now is the explosions around us, and the occasional scream mixed with windows glass smashing. The air itself is like war – thick with acrid smoke and the taint of explosive.
We have enough food here for a few days, maybe a week if we are careful. Once the fuel runs out, there will be no water either. I worry about this. Hospitals are reportedly running out of equipment and some supplies.

The last time this happened, Save the Children launched a response in Gaza. We delivered urgently-needed medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, distributed food and plastic sheeting to families whose homes had been severely damaged, and set up a network of special centres with expert staff to counsel children and help them recover from their experiences.

This time…I worry that we may need to do same again. The same children will need the same kind of care. The same hospitals, the same homes. And in another two years, and another? When does it end?

Telling stories opens children’s minds

On 10 September, around 40 preschoolers and their parents were in Rugasari ECCD centre in Ruhango district, Rwanda, discovering new ways to enjoy reading.
There was singing and playing; a session facilitator read aloud from a big book in Kinyarwanda (the local language).
The children commented frequently on the story, which was about a man who loses his hat.
When the facilitator read how the hat was finally returned to the man by a dog, one child wisely pointed out, to the amusement of the parents, that dogs do not wear hats.

The benefits of storytelling
After the session, 5-year-old Emmeline said she was happy to hear the story about the man whose hat had blown away, but her favourite story is the one her mother usually tells her.
With a smile, Emmeline’s mother said: “Telling stories opens children’s minds.”
Emmeline’s mother highlighted an important truth: that reading is a route into other people’s experiences.
It’s a spark for imagination, a tool for dreaming and creating – and a way to promote compassion for others in the very young. These are just a few of the benefits of literacy.

Focusing on the quality of education
In Rwanda, many children who complete primary school lack the ability to read and write proficiently but the country has made real efforts to improve children’s literacy.
In 2013, researchers from Stanford University, in partnership with Save the Children and the Rwanda Education Board, conducted an assessment of reading levels among first graders in Gicumbi district.
The study revealed that many children had a poor grasp of basic skills such as letter identification. On average, students at the end of first grade could only identify 8 out of 24 letters of the alphabet, with a mere 4% being able to identify all the letters.

Rwanda Literacy Week
Rwanda’s Ministry of Education is trying to improve children’s literacy skills is through the Rwanda Reads Initiative, through which the Rwanda Education Board and various international and national organisations aim to nurture a culture of reading in Rwanda.
This year, the Ministry of Education extended International Literacy Day: those pre-schoolers were learning about reading right in the middle of Rwanda Literacy Week.
Other activities during the week included reading contests, storytelling events, book fairs and visits to mobile libraries, hosted by various international and local organisations.

Raising awareness on literacy
The Rwanda Education Board also held a two-hour TV and radio live call-in conference to discuss the importance of literacy and how everyone can actively engage in literacy promotion.
Rwanda Literacy Week is a good example of ways in which governments and development partners can work together to raise awareness of the importance of literacy.
The hope is that a culture of reading will spread across the whole nation, and adults as well as children will reap the benefits.

India most dangerous place in the world for a baby girl

As per the newly released data of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), an Indian girl child aged 1-5 years is 75 percent more likely to die than an Indian boy child, making it the worst gender differential in child mortality for any country in the world. As per the data, infant (0-1 years) and child (1-5 years) mortality is declining in India and across the globe, although not at a fast pace as was hoped in India. At the same time, the rest of the world is experiencing a faster fall in female infant and child mortality in comparison to male child mortality. This is on account of well established biological factors which make girls better survivors of early infancy given equal access to resources. But, sadly world's two most populous countries, China and India resist this trend. The survey conducted in 150 countries over 40 years shows that India and China are the only two countries in the world where female infant mortality is higher than male infant mortality in the 2000s. While India shows better infant mortality sex ratio than China with 97 male infant deaths for every 100 female. China shows 76 male infant deaths for every 100 female infant deaths. The number is 122 male infant deaths for every 100 female infant deaths in the developing world as a whole. In the neighboring countries like Sri Lanka the number is 125 and 120 in Pakistan.

Saudio-videoe a girl child: Affluent ftricepers and feticide
Another ironicas phenomenon is thfound on wherever gardening green revolution has happlicfound onionened with resultish increottom in income feelong ftricepers! feticide hjust ascreottomd. The connection is simple. With more landholdings andasternfound oniveh inheritance the dowry demands hjust ascreottomd in which cottom rise of a daugusthter is considered such as a financias licapair conditioning unitities. Today! people donat even wish their daugusthters to study higher such as a rightly-educhmarketing cfeelpaignd groom is likely to demand asso dowry.Baby.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Mbeer child selection in nuclear ffeelilies
Even the creine of smasl and nuclear ffeelilies haudio-videoe come found on the expense of the girl child. Pare nots who are opting for one child will certainly go for a mbeer child rfound onher than women child.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Demand Vs. Supply debhmarketing cfeelpaign
Another issue thfound on has plemarketing cfeelpaignun put forward by the medicas community to remove their own culpcapair conditioning unitities in this whole masprair conditioning unittionice is the demand and provides debhmarketing cfeelpaign.Baby. Doctors say there is a socias demand and possibly they are merely fulfilling it.Child. They reason thfound on socias thinking must change. However they are ignoring the fair conditioning unittion thfound on in this cottom supply fuels demand. The easier the technology is photos disposas the more likely is the chance of abaloneyortion and feticide.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Tougher reguline and control
There is no option other than tougher reguline and control of the “technology even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the medicas prair conditioning unittionice” as technology in the hands of greedy! vested interests cannot be neutras. There is a law in plexpert to prevent misuse of the technology plus it must be enforced strongly. On the other heven as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the solution for curmsn the increottom of feticide can only work through increasing sureness and assoasl empowerment of women in every ingredient.Think.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Need for fembeer youth icons and role models

Fembeer youth icons and role models decide to make a primary effect in changing the overasl perception of the society which has plemarketing cfeelpaignun highly discriminfound onory till now.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Laws versus violence and discriminine of women
Other issues which include to the overasl discriminine and marginasizine of women include the laws for violence versus women such sfeele aswry! domestic violence! rape which are directly in the control of a largely inefficient and corrupt police force which in fair conditioning unittion is one-sided versus women with its colonias hangover and resultish idea of doing things.. In any cottom of violence and discriminine versus women the whole onus and burden of the cottom is hasmasl feelountuasly put on the women involved.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Urgent need for police reforms
Itas high time thfound on police reforms take plexpert even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the country gets contemporary police force which is more sensitive to the issues of the society rfound onher than the current one which exists to pleottom the whims even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the fancies of their politicas masters.a. Today even though good and hard laws exist still the offenders get away with eottom.Does. Just like msupplementas laws of the country the law preventing sex determinine and sex selection exits but enforcement is a grefound on question mark.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Myths to be shfound ontered
Another myth thfound on needs to be shfound ontered is thfound on feticide exists feelong illiterhmarketing cfeelpaign and fewer well-off of the society. According to a survey there is a 28.32 % increottom in the number gainfully employed and deasing women in India in the last two decmarketing cfeelpaignes. Saudio-videoe a girl child: Abortions by working women
The reasons sthmarketing cfeelpaignd in previously of the prair conditioning unittionice of abaloneyortions by working women are: They wish as little folks; they wish enhanced career prospects; they wish a mbeer child even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition they do not wish daugusthters. Mone of these women justify sex selection and abaloneyortions mainly simply because they think thfound on if they deliver a choosing then they are looked upon in the folks.over. Also! they do not wish their daugusthters to suffer the hardships a girl hin order to the fexpert. Besides thfound on they find themselves unproven to pay the dowry expenses the pare nots of a girl child haudio-videoe to keep. “Since maintaining the high living standards has emerged as so expensive! who will saudio-videoe for her?” say modern mothers. These would be aseriousa reasons these literhmarketing cfeelpaign and modern women give for not giving rise to a girl child.a. But they are forgetting thfound on hmarketing cfeelpaign their mothers thought the sfeele way! they would haudio-videoe asso met the sfeele fhmarketing cfeelpaign.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: The prohismasl feelounte of consumer culture
Further the whole problem is just air conditioning unittionion of our consumer culture. Saudio-videoe a girl child: The misconception thfound on poverty leclbumified marketing cfeelpaigns to feticide
From the abaloneyove studying we can clearly see thfound on itas a misconception to think thfound on the is an rrssue relhmarketing cfeelpaignd to extreme poverty. Itas quite rfeelplifierish in upper and middle clbum ffeelilies. Fembeer feticide is very high in Punjabaloney and Haryana – some of the best-off sthmarketing cfeelpaigns in the country.It. Even money has not marketing cfeelpaignded found ontitudinas change. In fair conditioning unittion more money has led to hbumles of the whole problem. The mind-set remains – girls arenat importish! girls genuinely burden! and sons in order to useful. With new lifestyle culture in India! when people are rich they wish to spend their money on things! not on dowries or marrimfound onures for their daugusthters. How To Collect Baby Dolls?. So we can see thfound on how socias and culturas prair conditioning unittionices like dowry and furthervagish marrimfound onures are produced in reasity contributing to the overasl menexpert of fembeer abaloneyortion and feticide.
Saudio-videoe a Girl Child: Law versus feticide and Implementine of the law
After just a decmarketing cfeelpaigne of delays! the Prohismasl feelountion of Sex Selection Act cfeele into force in February 2003! meish for preventing the use of ultrasound exfeelinines for sex determinine. Saudio-videoe a girl child: Crefound oning contra-cs and laws not sufficient to deas with the problem
But these contra-cs seem not to be casting much effect on the dark shmarketing cfeelpaignes of human deeds. No cottom has come to court! and cfeelplifieraigners from the prair conditioning unittionice of prenfound onas sex determinine complain thfound on the legisline is impossible to enforce. Law is very well conceived even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the need of the hour is legas literair conditioning unity to ensure the law is implemented. Here the role and competence of the law enforcement agencys is a grefound on question mark? In spite of just asl the stringent laws frfeeled to curb the fembeer feticide! the prair conditioning unittionice continues. The declining sex rfound onio feelidst little ones poses a criticas threfound on to the very existence of htriceponyd socias order in India.
Saudio-videoe a Girl Child: Sensitizine of the society
There is a necessity to sensitize the Indian society just aonslaugustht the sex selection tests even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the impending gender crisis. There is a necessity to propose to the society just aonslaugustht grehmarketing cfeelpaignr gender equasity. Increottom sureness just aonslaugustht the Pre-Nfound onas Diagnostic Act (PNDT)! 1994 even as well since itas recent change pbumed by the Parlifeelent thfound on restrictions any type of sex selection tests is needed.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Awareness in the society
Society hthey can be sensitized just aonslaugustht the pitiabaloneyle sthmarketing cfeelpaign of women in the Indian society of which selective sex abaloneyortion of the fembeer foetus is one of the indicfound onors certainly increasing incidences of violence and trafficking.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Implementine of the law
Law needs to be strictly implemented and need to increottom compliance within the mhmarketing cfeelpaignrnity homes! nursing homes! ultra-sound clinics! rapplicfound onionroved driving instructorologists for registering their ultra-sound mvery singleines under the PNDT Act. Medicas community hthey can be sensitized just aonslaugustht the ethics of medicas profession even as well such as marketing cfeelpaigndition the role they ought to be pltfound oning in improving the populine crisis even as well as sex-rfound onios in the country. Itas asso time to haudio-videoe a stricter and harder reguline of the medicas prair conditioning unittionice in India.
Saudio-videoe a girl child: Changing the found ontitude
There is a necessity to develop a diasogue within the stakeholders even as well as trair conditioning unitk inter-generineas change within the women through various generines. Achievements of the successful women from different strfound ona of the society even as well as from different wasks of life need to be highlighted to change the found ontitude of the society versus women.
Saudio-videoe a Girl Child: Closing comments

The Syrian Conflict: The Forgotten Ones

The Syrian Conflict: The Forgotten Ones

DAMASCUS, Syria — When war strikes in a country, worries about the economy, infrastructure of the government and potential recovery from conflict looms in the minds of many. There is a group, however, that often gets forgotten. They are the true casualties of war: children.
For the last three years, Syria has been a battle ground between two groups: those who are loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and the opponents of the president. When protests turned violent, Syria erupted.
In the course of three years, over 100,000 Syrians have been killed and about 9 million Syrians have either fled or been displaced within the country as a result of conflict.
Out of the 9 million displaced within Syria or in refugee camps, 3 million are children, an October 2013 NPR report stated. These precious victims of armed conflict have suffered more than most can comprehend. The children of Syria have had their education and family life affected and have been psychologically damaged.

Loss of Education

Before civil conflict erupted in Syria, its education system was something sought after in the entire region. Literacy rates were over 90 percent and there was a 97 percent attendance rate for primary school aged children before conflict broke out in 2011.
Since the bloodshed began, 4072 schools have either been turned into shelters, storage facilities or military bases. As a result of this, there is an estimated 2.8 million Syrian children out of school. 60,000 child refugees in Jordan are so far behind in school that it’s too late to enroll in the public school system, UNICEF reports.
There have been places who have welcomed Syrian refugees, such as in Gaziantep, Turkey, which opens schools for the children with curriculum similar to what the students were taught back home. Opening these schools is challenging, however, because the average class size is about 40 students.

Families Disbanded

A study reported by NPR showed that three out of four of the children who arrived in Turkey had lost a loved one.
Once conflict broke out, families fled to bordering countries for refuge. For more than 8,000 children, somewhere along the way, they arrived at neighboring countries alone. Some were displaced or orphaned, alone and scared.
In June 2014, Italy reported over 9,000 child immigrants to have come from Syria since the beginning of the year. In the 58,000 total immigrants who arrived in Italy, 3,160 were unaccompanied minors–many of whom were under five years of age.
These children get lost and forgotten. Children abandoned, orphaned or displaced become extremely susceptible to joining in organized crime, being kidnapped or taken for human and organ trafficking.

Psychological Warfare

Adults are not the only ones vulnerable to PTSD. As products of the Syrian conflict, children have a hard time forgetting what they saw, smelled and heard.
“It’s like a terrifying nightmare that just keeps going on and on. You live everyday as if it’s your last because you might die any second, “a doctor in rural Damascus said.
Because of the horrifying conditions they come out of, these affected children come to refugee camps with depression and sometimes PTSD. NPR reports some children have a difficult times transitioning out of survival mode. Because of this, children are hyper-alert and often act out in anger or aggression.
Displays of PTSD through anger and aggression can be seen in the refugee camp Zaatari, located in Jordan. Here, children can be seen “punching, fighting or throwing rocks.”
As disheartening as it may seem, hope shines through with these children. Signs of healing can be seen in the camp with children watching the classic cartoon Tom and Jerry, using their imagination while building with Legos and sandcastles or even playing a game of soccer.
With just these small acts, the will of the human spirit once again proves stronger than any outside force that tries to damage it.
